Dear Editor,

This is my message to all my brethren and sisters on the North Side of the country. On Sunday, March 18th you will be called to exercise your civic duties by electing your leaders for the next five years. These elections are the first of a kind that I see so many unknown individuals ready to represent We, the Saint Martin people. I have nothing against anybody whatsoever but this puts me to reflect and ask myself lots of disturbing questions.

When we were commune of Guadeloupe, as I can recall, you were elected as voluntary and unpaid municipal councillors. It seems as if today, everybody's looking for a salary and most of the time they still collect from their jobs! I ask myself if they would have been so eager to sit in the council if it was for no money! Some of them never did anything around in the community!

These elections are destroying our heritage of unity and togetherness as a Saint Martin people. It is so sad and disturbing to see our brothers and sisters tear each other apart while the wicked rejoice to the pain instilled in those families. Some of these candidates preach the word of God every Sunday but still they condone the suffering caused by this painful situation just to be elected. Some may say that's democracy, I say this is dividing to conquer. Our forefathers have suffered from such behaviours in the past and history is repeating itself. We don't learn from our mistakes!

People of Saint-Martin, we are going down the wrong path! Do not allow the wicked and evil to divide us! Don't listen to vain promises. The day after election, you will awake with headaches that no medicine will be able to cure. Be aware of the wolves in sheep's clothing. I have heard Country girl say a few months ago that Mr. Fleming did not like Saint Martin people! Well, she has disappointed me badly when she came out on the list with the Fisherman, a man who just a few days before tried to run his vehicle on Saint Martin people!

Why is it that some of these candidates are ready to sell their souls to the devil only to be elected? Everyone is criticizing the present administration by saying that things are so bad but can anyone tell me why they are fighting so hard to get in something so bad! This is called masochism. We all know how desperate the Country of France is, trying not to live the Greek Episode! This is no time to be surfing on clouds of dreams and utopia! The whole world is disturbed by the economic crisis and Saint-Martin is no exception. My fellow saint-martiners, don't get carried away by the amount of flags waving out there. Flags don't vote. I want you to analyze profoundly the different groups and see who is there to protect us as a people, a forgotten people. We have let too many people take advantage of us over the past years. The time has come now to stand up for ourselves. Choose the candidates who are not afraid to say that Saint Martin is Ours first! Why should we be afraid to defend what our ancestors have died for! We have no place to getaway when things get sour!

Those who are dividing to conquer, they all have a place they call Home and where they escape to when bad times hit us.

Stop being fooled by those who say, we have to accept all who come to us; yes, I agree but not at all cost. We need to elect men and women of conviction who will defend our rights without any sentiment of guilt. Saint Martin is We Own!

I truly believe that President Gumbs and his team started a job that needs to be finished! It's only when you are in the heat that you know what's cooking! Lots of those candidates would have not been able to handle the affairs as they did with so many hurdles they had to cross.
