Dear Editor,

The Middle Region & Defiance Community Council welcomes the initiative of the Police Force of St. Maarten in introducing the community policing in the various districts. We have forwarded a letter to Mr. Carl John, the Police Commissioner, congratulating him on what we consider a very great idea to introduce community policing.

We have offered to meet with the Senior Officer that is assigned to Middle Region and Defiance to discuss with him or her some of the issues that we believe are affecting our communities.

We strongly believe that in order to curb crime on the island such an initiative is very important. The police must know their community and the community must know their Police Force.

We hope that the entire country will support this initiative and this can be the beginning of the general public working together with the police to combat crime. We must all remember that crime is everybody business and that it has no boundaries.

Can the community assist the police in combating crime in many ways? You darn well bet. For once and for all a strong message should be sent to the criminals and criminals to be that we are not going to sit by and allow them to take over our homes, streets and businesses. We will be fighting back by working hand-in-hand with our Police Force. Every time a crime is committed against one of us we must all feel that it could have been me or you.

Let's join hands together and make this a better community.
